This paper outlines the characteristics of nuclear apocalypse narratives and examines how the possibility of a bright future is called into question in some novels dealing with the ultimately catastrophic conditions. To this end, I have analyzed Nevil Shute’s On the Beach and compared it with another nuclear fiction, Level 7 by Mordecai Roshwald, identifying the way people accept their destiny without salvation faced with the end of the world. On the Beach portrays the impacts of nuclear threats on the southern hemisphere’s collateral damage, suggesting no one is untouchable by nuclear war and revealing the grim reality of uncontrolled technology that looms humanity. This study attempts to delve into the novel’s crucial distinctions in more detail and underscore the characters’ tragedy, magnified by Shute’s solid writing style that excludes exaggeration and rhetoric.
