Student Motivation and Classroom Achievement in a Korean University EFL Reading Class

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국 대학의 EFL (영어를 외국어로 배우는 수업) 학생들의 학습 동기와 영어 읽기 수업에서의 학업성취도의 관계를 알아보고자 함이다. 이를 위해 기술통계와 상관분석을 이용한 양적연구방법이 사용되었다. 두 학급에서 총 70명의 1학년 비영어 전공 학생들이 본 연구에 참여하였다. 본 연구 참여자들의 학습 동기를 알아보기 위하여 18문항의 설문지를 실시하였고, 그들의 학업성취도를 위하여는 영어 읽기 수업의 학기 중간고사를 활용하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면 49명의 학생이 그들의 학습 동기와 학업성취 사이에 연관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 나머지 21명의 학생은 학습 동기와 학업 성취 사이에 어떠한 연관관계를 보이지 않았다. 이러한 연구 결과는 같은 주제에 관해 연구한 이전의 연구들과 같은 것으로, 이는 학생들의 학습 동기가 그들의 학업성취와 항상 연관성이 있는 것은 아니라는 것을 다시 한번 알 수 있게 되었다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구 결과에 대하여 실제 수업에서 교사들이 어떻게 활용할지에 대한 토론으로 끝을 맺었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the motivation of Korean EFL university students and their classroom achievement in reading English. This was a quantitative study, using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. A total of 70 students in two different university ESL reading classes participated in this study, and they were all non-English majors. A survey instrument containing 18 statements was administered to the study participants to measure their level of motivation. Classroom achievement in the skill of reading in English was extracted from mid-term course grades for these students. Study results showed that 49 of the students displayed a relationship between their level of motivation and their classroom achievement. The other 21 students did not show any relationship between their motivation and classroom achievement. The conclusion section of the study was focused on a discussion of study implications for classroom language teachers. (149)
