Young So Kang has been known as one of the most leading activists of national movements in Hawaii as well as in the America from the late 1900s to the early 1920s. He was a successful Korean businessman when he moved to Chicago in the mid 1920s, managing the Kang Brothers Cafeteria Co. His long-lasting recognition in the Korean-American community owes to his significant contribution to the foundation of the Korean National Association in the early days. Such as his days of full responsibility in charge as a general manager of the Korean National Association, both in Hawaii and the States, he fulfilled his presidency of the Korean Association of the North America in order to take a lead in national movements and to protect Korean residents in the States. Furthermore, his business provided a great deal of financial support to Korean national movement. His confidential integrity and exquisite coordination skills enabled to unite and develop Korean community in the difficult times. Although he had earned no regular education degree, his leadership was irreplaceable in the Korean-American community at even his young age.
Kang’s father and brothers, also immigrants to the States, supported national movements through every possible ways. In addition to their active engagement in Young Korean Academy and Korean National Association, their financial support played a critical role in the movements. However, Kang had never represented any specific political group of people in the realm of national movement in America. He was rather one of the staffs as well as a leader and patron of the Korean National Association. For the reason, he was entitled and commemorated as a man of constant service to the Korean National Association.
