Mental Health of Middle School Low Achieving Students and the Impact of Personal and Environmental Variables

국문 초록

본 연구는 학습부진 중학생과 일반 학생의 정신건강 수준을 비교하고, 이에 영향을 미치는 개인적·환경적 변인을 탐색하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 ‘한국교육종단연구(KELS) 2013’의 4차년도(2016년) 데이터에서 1,151명의 학습부진 학생과 5,488명의 일반 학생 자료를 수집하였으며, 두 독립표본 t검증과 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 학습부진 학생이 일반 학생보다 통계적으로 더 높은 수준의 불안, 우울, 그리고 자살 충동을 경험하는 것으로 드러났다. 또한, 개인적 변인(성별, 신체적 자기개념, 학업적 자기개념, 무동기), 가정환경 변인(부모와의 상호작용, 부모의 정서적 지원, 부모 애착), 학교환경 변인(교사-학생 관계, 교우관계, 수업 분위기, 학교폭력피해 경험)이 중학교 학습 부진 학생의 정신건강 수준에 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 논의와 후속 연구에 대한 제언을 기술하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the difference in mental health between middle school low achieving students and students without disabilities, and explore personal and environmental variables that influence the mental health. For the study, 1,151 low achieving students and 5,488 students without disabilities were selected from the fourth year data of ‘Korean Educational Longitudinal Study 2013’ which were collected in 2016, and conducted two independent sample t-test and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results demonstrate that low achieving students revealed statistically higher level of anxiety, depression, and suicidal impulse than students without disabilities. Furthermore, personal variables(gender, physical and academic self-concept, amotivation), home environment variables(interaction with parents, emotional support of parents, parental attachment), and school environment variables(teacher-student relationship, peer relationship, classroom climate, school violence victimization experience) had statistically meaningful effects on the mental health of middle school low achieving students. From the results above, discussions of this study and suggestions for the further study were described.
