국문 초록

언어교육에서 중요하게 규정하고 있는 요소 중 하나가 바로 결속성과 응집성의 문제이다. 특히 결속성은 문장을 의미적으로 연결하는 기능을 하고 있기 때문에 한국어교육에서도 중요한 교육적 방법이 되어왔다. 그러나 이 논문에서는 결속성 교육이 기대한 것만큼 효과가 크지 않다고 주장하며 오히려 응집성 교육이 필요하다는 주장을 한다. 이런 주장을 검증하기 위해 이 논문에서는 결속성과 응집성의 개념을 검토했다. 아울러 결속성의 효과를 검증하기 위해 결속성 장치(cohesive devices)와 텍스트 질 사이의 통계적 연관성을 살펴보았다. 그 결과는 여러 논문에서 텍스트 질과 결속성 장치는 통계적으로 유의미한 상관관계가 없거나 아니면 부적관계로 드러났다. 이런 결과는 결속성을 통해 좋은 텍스트를 만들 수 없다는 뜻이 된다. 이 논문은 이에 대한 대안으로 응집성(coherence)이 높은 텍스트를 만들기를 권유한다. 응집성(coherence)은 독자들이 복잡한 인지 과정을 통해 텍스트에서 일관되게 찾아낸 총체적 의미의 상이라 규정할 수 있다. 많은 실험 결과들은 응집성 높은 텍스트가 좋은 평가를 받았다. 이런 점을 감안하면 한국어교육에서도 응집성 높일 수 있는 다양한 교육방법을 개발할 필요가 있다. 이 논문에서는 응집성을 높일 수 있는 문화적 교육 방식을 제안하고 있다.

영문 초록

One of the elements considered significant in language education is the problem with cohesion and coherence. Cohesion, especially, worked as an important educational tool in Korean education by aiding semantic connections between sentences. However, this paper claims that cohesion education is not as effective as expected and in fact coherence education is more necessary. In order to verify such claim, this paper reviews the idea of cohesion and conference. Furthermore, the relationship between cohesive devices and text quality is investigated to verify the effect of cohesion. The results shows either negative or no statistically significant correlation between cohesive devices and text quality in many essays; this projects that cohesion does not really contribute to the quality of essays. As a response, this paper suggests coherence’s significance in writing quality essays. Coherence can be classified as a representation of underlying global meaning coherently found by the readers who went through a complex cognitive process. Many of the experiments’ results showed high coherence texts receiving favorable evaluation. With this respect, Korean education needs to employ various educational methods that can increase the coherence. Therefore, this paper proposes strengthening of cultural education methods to increase the coherence.
