Compartment fires is one of the crucial topics in the field fire safety because enclosed space can hold heat and combustion products which leads to complex combustion process and the production of toxic gases. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) is one of the widely used open source CFD codes for the fire simulations. OpenFOAM is another open source CFD code which can treat wide varieties of CFD problems. However, OpenFOAM provide the advantage to incorporate different combustion models and reaction mechanism to treat the complex combustion process to enhance the predictions of product gases. Thus, an OpenFOAM simulation was performed to investigate n-Heptane pool fire in a large-scale compartment and its predictions are compared with the experiment and FDS predictions. The dimensions of the large-scale compartment is 3.60 m×2.40 m×2.40 m, and its opening size is 2.0 m×0.8 m. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence approach with single-step Eddy Dissipation Model (EDM) combustion model Finite Volume Discrete Ordinate Method (FVDOM) radiation model are incorporated in FireFOAM solver to treat the turbulent combustion. Pressure-Implicit with Splitting of Operators (PISO) algorithm is used as solution scheme to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. The OpenFOAM predicted temperature and species concentrations in the front and rear locations of the compartment showed good agreements with the experimentally measured temperature and species concentrations. The prediction performance of OpenFOAM is similar to the FDS.
