A Comparison of Diagnostic Profiles of Students in Korea and the USA on TIMSS Mathematics Assessment

국문 초록

[연구목적] 본 연구의 목적은 2011년에 시행된 국제 수학ㆍ과학 추이 연구의 수학평가 결과를 이용하여 한국과 미국의 8학년 학생들에게서 얻은 진단 프로파일을 비교하는 것이었다. [연구방법] DINA 모형을 적용하여 한국과 미국 학생들의 진단 프로파일을 구하였다. 선행연구에서 개발하고 타당화한 내용 중심 Q-행렬을 점검하여 사용하였다. [연구결과] 문항 통계를 점검한 후 각 나라 학생들의 문항속성 숙달률을 비교하였다. 두 나라 학생들 간에 가장 큰 차이는 기하 영역에서 발견되었는데, 기하는 고차원적 사고를 요하는 영역이며 이러한 차이는 선행연구에서 발견된 것과 유사하였다. 그러나 기하 영역에 속하는 속성 중 하나에 대해서는 미국 학생들의 숙달 확률이 한국 학생들보다 높았다. [결론] 연구 결과는 한국의 수학교육에서 필요한 처치 전략과 함께 논의하였다. 비록 한국 학생들이 기하에서 전반적으로 더 높은 숙달률을 보였지만 미국 학생들의 숙달률이 더 높은 하나의 속성에 대해서는 추가 연구가 필요하다. 국가 간 비교에 있어 DINA모형을 적용하는 것의 장점과 단점에 대해서도 논하였다.

영문 초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic profiles of eighth grade students in Korea and the United States of America (USA) on the eighth grade student s mathematics assessment of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011. Methods: The profiles were obtained by applying the deterministic-inputs, noisy “and” gate (DINA) model for the students in both countries. A content-driven Q-matrix, developed and validated in previous research studies, was checked and used in this study. Results: After checking item statistics, the mastery probabilities of both countries were compared. The largest gap was found on Geometry, which requires a higher-order thinking skills. This finding is in line with that of the previous literature. However, the US students had a higher master probability on one of the attributes in Geometry than Korean students. Conclusion: The results were discussed with remedial strategies for mathematics education in Korea. Although Korean students had higher mastery probability in Geometry, the one attribute, on which Korean eighth grade students showed lower mastery probability, needs further analyses. The strengths and weaknesses of applying the DINA model for a comparison of countries were also discussed.
