13-8 stainless steel is a martensitic precipitation-hardened stainless steel that has excellent strength, high hardness, superior toughness and good corrosion resistance. 13-8 stainless steel have been used in various industrial such as aircraft components, petrochemical components and nuclear industries. However, 13-8 stainless is difficult to conventional machining because of its mechanical properties. Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is known as an effective machining method for difficult-to-cut materials. The purpose of this study is to investigate the proper preheating temperature for a laser preheating of 13-8 stainless steel. Thermal analysis was carried out by transient thermal analysis. The proper laser power and preheating temperature were determined through thermal analysis. The preheating temperature for the laser assisted machining was determined at 450±25℃. The results of this study can be applied to LAM research of 13-8 stainless steel.
