In recent years, Carbon Ceramic Composites (C-SiC) have increased significantly due to their excellent properties that relatively low density, light weight and high temperature mechanical properties. Demand for composite materials is increasing in a various fields such as the automotive and aerospace industries, but machining is difficult due to the high hardness and brittleness. Accordingly many researchers proposed new machining methods for hard-to-cut materials. Laser assisted machining (LAM) is a method that machining hard-to-cut material using laser heat source. In LAM, material is preheated locally by the laser heat source and decreases the strength and hardness of the material. For now, few researches by the LAM of carbon ceramics have been carried out. In this study, machining experiment of carbon ceramic composites in LAM was carried out and machining characteristics such as cutting force, surface roughness and tool wear are analyzed. The results of this study can be applied to LAM research of composite material.
