13-8 stainless steel is a martensitic precipitation-hardened stainless steel that has excellent strength, high hardness, superior toughness and good corrosion resistance. 13-8 stainless steel is used in numerous applications such as aircraft components, petrochemical components and nuclear industries. The high strength also makes this material difficult to machine owing to high cutting forces and relatively short tool life. Laser-assisted machining is known as an effective machining method for difficult-to-machine materials. This study investigated the proper preheating temperature during the laser assisted machining of 13-8 stainless steel. Thermal analysis was carried out by ANSYS software. The proper laser power and preheating temperature were determined. The temperature for the laser assisted machining was determined at 450±25℃. In these conditions, laser-assisted machining is an economical method for 13-8 stainless steel machining.
