Societal demands for ethical management(EM) are dramatically increasing in the 21st century. EM is a basic requirement in modern era for securing social legitimacy and as well for protecting and improving the interests of stakeholders who are much more keen and active than before. Therefore, EM is pre-requisite not only for social purpose but also for economic reasons.
This study seeks to find an appropriate configuration of EM codes, values, and conducts, which contributes to the measurement for evaluation and monitoring from the societal standpoint. To do this, we examined various configurations and relationships between EM codes, values, and behavioral guidelines in 30 large Korean firms. Then it is proposed to adopt the configuration consisting of three elements: corporate credo, ethical code, and the ethical behavior guidelines.
Then, a three dimensional model has been suggested to develop the system of managing ethical issues. Those dimensions are: core values of ethical management, the scope of stakeholders, and the categories of EM and CSR. It has been suggested to set 3 or 4 core values of EM typically in case of large firms. The stakeholders surrounding the firm are prioritized into primary and secondary interest groups, which reflect the industry characteristics and the firm s business models and strategies as well. The EM and CSR categories include legal, ethical, economic, and social.
Using the matrices of the dimensions, we can develop a comprehensive list of a priori ethical issues. Then it becomes possible to design in detail the management system of ethical issues, which helps minimize the risk of ethical violations and prepare fully invented response repertoires. The firm can improve its agility and responsiveness to ethical issues by adopting and implementing a well developed system of ethical issue management.
