교양교육에서의 타인의 고통에 대한 감수성 교육의 중요성

국문 초록

본 논문은 타인의 고통에 대한 철학적 성찰에서부터 출발한다. 타인의 고통을 받아들이는 능력인 감수성은 동정심을 통해 가능하다. 동정심은 일종의 연민의 감정으로 특히 타자의 고통이나 불행 등에 대해서 스스로가 직접 느낌으로써 갖게 되는 도덕적 감정이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 동정심만으로는 행위에 관한 도덕적 판단을 제시할 수 없으므로 이런 동정심을 불러일으키는 힘인 공감의 능력이 우리가 타인의 고통에 직면해서 어떻게 행위를 해야 하는 지에 관한 윤리적 문제에서 중요한 요소로서 등장하게 된다. 본 논문은 쇼펜하우어의 동정론과 레비나스의 타인의 얼굴을 통한 고통의 윤리적 의미 등을 다루면서 도덕의식의 기초가 되는 동정심과 그것의 작동원리인 공감력이 어떤 구조를 통해 스스로의 한계와 제약을 극복하면서 인간의 윤리적 행위를 이끌어 내는지를 밝히는 연구가 될 것이다. 궁극적으로는 대학에서의 인문 교양교육이 인간다운 삶의 조건에 대한 이론적 제시뿐만이 아닌 윤리적 삶에 대한 실천적 기능을 수행하는 것을 이념으로 삼고 있음을 다시 한 번 되돌아보는 기회가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This study starts from a philosophical reflection on the pain of others. Sensitivity is an ability to perceive the pain of others and it is a moral emotion that can be generated from compassion. Compassion is the feeling of pity for others. Especially, it can be considered as a moral emotion that we feel in response to the suffering or misfortune of others. As it is impossible to give a moral judgment only with understanding, sympathy that brings compassion appears as a critical factor on how to behave when faced with the pain of others from an ethical point of view. Sympathy is the basis of moral sentiments. Referring to the ethical meaning of suffering, the theory of sympathy by Schopenhauer and the concept of the ‘Face of the Other’ by Levinas, this study examines how sympathy is directly related to human behavior. Such philosophical reflection on the formation of compassion and sympathy will be meaningful to reveal whether compassion and sympathy for the pain of others can overcome individual limitations and in how far it can effectively lead to a moral act. Ultimately, it will offer an opportunity to reconfirm that the liberal education in colleges not only suggests theoretical approaches on the conditions of life pursuing human dignity but also should enable to lead an ethical life.
