The contactless brake system, which has a “C-type” bracket, is conventionally used as a personal outdoor rehabilitation equipment. It is fundamentally challenging to produce small sizes of the equipment owing to its C-type structure. Furthermore, it is impossible to control the load because of possible severe problems such as damage to the eccentricity of the rotary this study, a permanent-magnet contactless braking system, which has a round-type bracket adjustable to the applied load, is proposed. The performance of the system is experimentally compared and analyzed using the measured torque values. The effects of the conductance of nonmagnetic materials and gap between the permanent magnets on the torque values are observed as a method for increasing the load. The method maintains a smooth exercise sensitivity owing to the wide eddy current distribution of the load braking device having the round-type bracket. The braking system proposed in this study can be applied to rehabilitation machines, which can control the load according to the user’s condition and has advantages such as small size and reduced cost.
