This study investigated the usability of muunsan in the Donguibogam (Korean Medical Encyclopedia) as a cosmetic material by analyzing its physiological activities. In terms of total phenol contents, MUSD and MUSE were 234.34±0.59 ㎎/g and 429.21±1.55 ㎎/g, respectively. It was confirmed that it has poly-phenolic compounds, which are similar to the reference material ‘tannic acid’. According to the measurement of antioxidant efficacies, MUSD and MUSE were 89% and 96% each at 500㎍/㎖ in terms of DPPH radical scavenging activity. In terms of ABTS radical scavenging activity, MUSD and MUSE were 70% or higher and 80% or higher at 1,000㎍/㎖, showing antioxidant effects similarly to that of Vit-C. In ROS production, MUSD and MUSE revealed a significant decrease (***p<0.001, **p<0.01, *p<0.05) at 50, 100 ㎍/㎖ and 10, 50, 100 ㎍/㎖ respectively. In cytotoxicity, cell viability was 85% or higher up to 500 ㎍/㎖, confirming no toxicity. In terms anti-inflammatory effects, nitric oxide production decreased up to 500 ㎍/㎖. According to a western blot, when the extract was processed by concentration, protein expression declined in a dose-dependent manner. In antimicrobial activity, as the extract got more concentrated, antimicrobial activity increased, confirming antimicrobial effects. The above results show that muunsan extract can be used in manufacturing cosmetics as a natural substance with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
