Mukhopadhyay’s Mind Tree goes beyond medical informations about self, emotion, and the cognitive channels of the typical classic autistic. The value of this memoir can be sought in that, different from the negative ideas of neurologists in general, it shows the possibility of classic autistic’s ‘bildung’ through education.
Furthermore, implicating various methodologies of language education for the limited cognitive and sensory channels of the classic autistic, the book is an intriguing interdisciplinary reading specifically related to special education. Most importantly, Mind Tree creates a unique piece of literature through the young autistic’s limited words and cognitive channel of synesthesia. The author’s incommunicable anxiety, fear, and his mother’s suffering are all as deep and intense as those of neurotypical literature. The memoir shows the possibility that classic autistic’s unique cognitive and sensory channels can defamiliarize the neurotypical literature and thus extend the existing literary arena.
