A New High-Yielding, Large Nut Chestnut Cultivar, “Daehan” Suitable for Processing

영문 초록

A new chestnut cultivar, “Daehan” was developed from the cross between the cultivars “Tanzawa” and “Ganne” by chestnut breeding laboratory of the Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). The preliminary, advanced, and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this cultivar, were carried out from 1980 to 2004 (Fig. 1). “Daehan” is a mid-season ripening cultivar with optimal ripening date around September 22. It has a good nut quality for processing. The average nut weight is 29.2 g, much heavier than that of the check cultivar, “Arima” (Table 1, 2, 3). It also has resistance to chestnut blight disease and chestnut gall wasp. The average yield of 13 years old “Daehan” was 25.0 kg per tree, which was almost 1.6 times higher than that of “Arima” (Table 4, 5, Fig. 2, 3).
