국문 초록

본 연구는 문헌 분석을 통해 문화와 부모의 자녀 양육 행동 간의 관계를 이해하는 데 있어 개인주의 / 집단주의의 이론적 틀의 한계를 명확히 하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 본논문에서는 문헌 분석을 토대로 문화와 부모의 자녀 양육 행동의 관계에 관한 연구의 역사 적인 경향성을 먼저 고찰하였다. 다음으로 중국의 부모의 자녀 양육 행동을 연구한 선행연 구에 중점을 두어, 개인주의 / 집단주의의 이론적 틀을 통해 문화와 부모의 자녀 양육 행동 간의 관계를 고찰하였다. 이러한 이분법적인 이론적 틀을 적용하는 것은 집단주의적 문화적 맥락으로 분류되는 다양한 문화 집단에서 발견할 수 있는 부모의 자녀 양육 행동과 자녀의 성취에 대한 믿음에서 다양성을 설명하는 데에 분명한 한계가 있음을 본 문헌연구는 밝힐 수 있었다. 이 분석의 결과는 문화와 부모의 자녀 양육 행동 간의 관계를 조사하는 연구자들에게 개인주의 / 집단주의를 고수하기보다, 문화와 부모의 자녀 양육 행동 간의 관계에 대한 보다 미묘한 이해를 가능하게 하는 이론적 틀을 모색할 것을 촉구한다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I firstly examined the historical trends of researches on the relationship between culture and parenting based on literature analysis. Next, I examined the relationship between culture and parenting through the framework of Individualism/Collectivism by focusing on the Chinese parenting studies. Finally, based on the results of this literature analysis, it was aimed to clarify the limitations of the framework of Individualism/Collectivism in understanding the relationship between culture and Chinese parenting. By using this dichotomized framework, there was a limit to explanations of the variability in parenting practices and child achievement found in other ethnic groups which are categorized as the collectivistic cultural context. The results of this analysis urges the researchers who examine culture and parenting to find a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between culture and parenting, instead of adhering to individualism/collectivism.
