Although ethylene is associated with a wide range of plant responses, it has been mainly developed as a sprout suppressant during storage in potato processing industry. However, this study was carried out to investigate the possibility of using ethylene as a physiological age control agent for stored seed potatoes. ‘Superior’ potatoes were treated with different concentrations of ethylene and treatment methods in chambers to investigate the sprout growth during storage. Rapid increase in respiration ratio were observed in all ethylene-treated potato tubers after one or two days after treatment. The breaking dormancy was slightly stimulated by the short period(3 days) treatment of ethylene, but sprouting was significantly inhibited by continuous ethylene treatment during storage. In the experiment for continuous ethylene application to seed potato tuber, the significant inhibition of sprouting was exhibited in both of 2 and 4μL/L concentrations, and short and many of sprouts were also observed in those treatments. Additionally, their potato tubers were planted on pots, and emergency, the growth of stem and stolon, and yield were investigated in greenhouse. Emergency speed did not show difference among control and two treatments of ethylene concentrations, but stems and stolons per plant were increased by continuous ethylene treatments. Small differences of yield between treatments of control and continuous ethylene application was observed, but number of tuber per plant was significantly increased in the treatment that seed potatoes treated with continuous ethylene were planted. As a result of this study, we can expect that the application of continuous ethylene gas, especially in the concentration range from 2 to 4μL/L, could be useful means to control the physiological age of seed potato tubers during storage.
