영문 초록

The Cooperative Movement Association (協同組合運動社) had focused on organizing regional associations since its establishment in 1926. Local notables and various classes of people participated in these associations. During the national lecture tour in 1927, community movement activists who participated in youth organizations and the Alliance for Protection of Korean Residents in Manchuria (在滿同胞擁護同盟) fully cooperated. After it relocated its headquarters to Korea in 1928, the Cooperative Movement Association participated in the Cooperative Accounting Association (協同組合經理組合) organization, which banded together with the intransigent nationalist economic movement organization, Jaryeoksa (自力社). At the regular general meeting in 1929, it received congratulatory messages and telegrams from socialist youth and labor organizations. The Cooperative Movement Association banded together regardless of nationalist and socialist factions, and particularly the participation of the Seosang-faction socialist group was discovered frequently. The Cooperative Movement Association aimed at construction of a cooperative society based on cooperatism and equalitarianism, and chose social reform and the economic independence of Koreans as urgent tasks. It demanded man-centered management of consumers’ cooperatives in which everyone can participate, and emphasized education and training for long-term continuation of the movement. This operating policy aimed at the ‘Third Way’ other than the two currents of the national movement during Japanese imperialism. The activities and aims of the Cooperative Movement Association require that the common view that the cooperative association movement during Japanese imperialism is the economic movement of nationalists should be reassessed.
