This article examines Augustine’s view of the concept of ‘pride’. He sees pride as the root of all sin. Pride is the archetypal sin, which all other sins proceed as from a root. Pride provides the other sins. Pride is connected with humans’ fall. There was pride behind original sin of Adam and Eve. Pride is a lover self as a creature rather than God as the Creator.
We can find the concept and role of pride in the life and controversies of Augustine. He thought pride was behind the arguments of Donatists that the church should be pure, and could keep humans’ holiness with their ability. Augustine also asserts that Pelagianism is another expression of human pride because every human being is conceived and born in sin and should be saved by the divine grace.
Augustine’s theory of two cities also offers the concept of pride. According to Augustine, there are two cities: the city of God and the earthly city. Pride is connected with the earthly city which is constituted by selfish love. The earthly city is under the domination of pride. Pride causes the citizens of the earthly city to enjoy what they are given from God, as if they were their own.
Augustine finds that pride is the antithesis of humility. Humility makes human pride humble and provides humans with faith. God calls all humans to overcome their pride and to be saved. Jesus Christ showed the good example of divine humility in his incarnation and death on the cross. Therefore, humility is the valuable one of Christians virtues.
