국문 초록

이 논문에서는 일본 선진국 담론의 개념적 특징과 이에 반영된 일본의 자아 정체성, 타국인식을 한국과의 비교적 관점에서 살펴본다. 일본의 선진국 담론에서는 ‘후진국’이라는 용어가 현재 대중 담론에서 잘 사용되지 않고 있으며, ‘선진국’에 대한 이상화 경향과 ‘도상국’에 대한 주변화 경향이 한국 담론에서의 ‘선진국’과 ‘후진국’ 간 지위 격차에 비해 크지 않았다. 일본의 선진국 담론에서는 일본 스스로를 선진국으로 규정하면서도, 서구 선진국과 비교하며 스스로의 위치와 위상을 확인하는 경향이 나타났다. 일본의 담론에서 ‘선진국’ 일본은 도상국을 지원, 배려해야 한다는 인식이 두드러져, 선진국 담론이 한국과 달리 스스로의 자존 감을 높이고 국제 사회에서 책임 있는 국가가 돼야 한다는 국민 의식을 야기했다. 일본의 선진국 담론에서 한국의 정체성은 대체로 선진국으로 규정되고 있으며, 중국은 도상국으로 규정되면서도 그 크기와 국제적 위상을 반영해 대국으로 인식되는 경향도 나타났다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the characteristics of Japanese “senshinkoku” (advanced country) discourse in comparison with the Korean discourse of seonjinguk, in which Japanese self identity and their perceptions of other countries are reflected. In Japanese discourse, the concept of “koushinkoku” (backward country) is rarely used in public space, which differs from the Korean case, and the tendencies of idealizing “senshinkoku” and of marginalizing “tojiyoukoku” (developing country) are not that noticeable given the huge gap between “seonjinguk” and “hujinguk” (backward country) in the Korean discourse. Japan is generally self-identified as a “senshinkoku” while there is a tendency to consistently check its status and position by comparing itself with other senshinkoku, e.g., those in the West. There also appears a notable perception in the discourse that Japan as a “senshinkoku” should support and care about “tojokoku,” which, unlike the Korean case, enhances national self-respect and incurs a national sentiment to behave as a responsible country in the world. In Japanese discourse, Korea is generally identified as a “senshinkoku,” and China tends to be regarded as a “tojokoku” while there is also a tendency to consider China as a great country given its size and power on the international stage.
