지역 변인에 따른 고등학생 영어 읽기 세부 능력및 영어 교육 실태 조사: 대도시와 중소도시 및 읍면산간 지역 비교

국문 초록

본 연구는 영어 격차가 우려되는 변인인 지역에 따른 학습자들의 영어 읽기 세부 능력과 영어 교육 실태를 조사하고자 대도시와 중소도시 및 읍면산간으로 구분되는 지역에 거주하는 고등학교 2학년 학생들의 영어 읽기 세부 능력을 문항별 및 문항 유형별로 비교하고, 이들의 영어 교육 실태를 사교육 정도, 자기주도학습 정도, EBS 영어 학습 정도, 학습자의 영어 읽기 학습 활동, 학교에서 행해지는 영어 읽기 수업 활동 등에 중점을 두어 살펴보았다. 대도시로 간주되는 A광역시에 거주하는 고등학교 2학년 학생 737명과 중소도시 및 읍면산간 지역으로 간주되는 B도에 거주하는 고등학교 2학년 학생 659명을 대상으로 영어 읽기 능력 평가를 실시한 결과, 대도시 지역에 거주하는 학생들이 중소도시 및 읍면산간 지역에 거주하는 학생들보다 전반 적으로 모든 읽기 문항에서 높은 성취를 보였으며, 특히 글을 추론하는 능력이 월등히 뛰어난 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 영어 교육 실태와 관련하여서도 대도시에 거주하는 학생들이 중소도시 및 읍면산간 지역에 거주하는 학생들보다 사교육 경험 및 EBS 영어 프로그램 활용도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 마찬가지로, 영어 사교육과는 별개로 학생들이 스스로 영어 학습을 하는 자기주도학습 시간 및 영어 실력을 향상 시키기 위하여 스스로 노력한 경험에 관하여서도 대도시에 거주하는 학생들이 중소 도시 및 읍면산간 지역에 거주하는 학생들보다 훨씬 더 적극적인 태도로 임한 것으로 드러났다. 이와 같은 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 영어 읽기 교육과 관련된 다양한 교육적, 정책적 제언을 하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study intends to examine the English reading performance and educational environment of the two groups of second-year high school students who are characterized as those who live in an urban area and in a rural area, respectively. In particular, the study focused on the extent to which the students receive private tutoring, EBS English education program, and the learning programs focused on improving English reading skills. It also closely examined the English instructional program carried out in school. Seven hundred thirty-seven students who reside in an urban area and 649 students who reside in a rural area responded to an English reading test and a survey. The results showed that those who live in an urban area outperformed those who live in a rural area on every item in the English reading test and especially on the items requiring inferencing skills. In addition, those who live in an urban area made more use of private tutoring and English education program than those who live in a rural area. Lastly and interestingly, those students who live in an urban area invested more time in doing self-directed learning to improve their English competence. Based upon these results, this study provides several educational and political suggestions.
