국문 초록

본 연구는 해상운임의 한국경제 선행지수로서 활용 가능성에 대하여 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히, 본 연구에서는 주요 해상운임의 한국 무역규모에 대한 선행관계를 중점적으로 분석하였다. 주요 해상운임지수(BDI, BCI, BPI, BDTI)와 한국 무역규모(수출, 수입, 해상수출, 해상 수입)에 대한 2000년 1월부터 2018년 3월까지의 월간 자료를 분석하였다. 두 변수간 선행관계는 벡터자기회귀모형에 기초한 그랜저 인과성을 통해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 건화물선 운임지수는 한국 무역에 대해서 선행지수로서 활용이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 유조선 운임지수와 한국의 무역규모의 관계에서는 인과관계가 양방향이거나 무역규모가 운임지수에 선행하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 무역의존도가 높은 한국의 경제를 예측함에 있어서 해상운임지수에서 교역량에 대한 선행정보를 얻을 수 있음을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Purpose : This study proposes the use of shipping indices as leading indicators of the Korean economy. Specifically, this paper focuses on the importance of representative shipping freight indices for predicting the international trade of Korea. Research design, data, methodology : This paper examines monthly shipping indices (BDI, BCI, BPI and BDTI) and trade volumes (exports, imports, seaborne exports and seaborne imports) for the period of January 2000 and March 2018. Granger causality tests based on vector autoregressive (VAR) models are employed for estimating the relationship between freight indices and Korean trade volume. Results : The results indicate that shipping freight indices in the dry bulk sector infomationally lead the international trade volume of Korea. However, in the tanker sector, the direction of causality is opposite or bi-directional. Conclusions : The findings in the paper suggest that shipping indices can be used as leading indicators for cross-border transaction of Korea of which national economy exhibits high dependency on international trade.
