영문 초록

This study attempted to identify economic factors influencing consumption variations for the principal textile fibers in Korea and to formulate the price equations for the fiber yarns. The empirical analysis revealed that certain economic factors appear to be important determinants in the textile fiber consumption : among these variables, income and prices are the most consistantly significant factors. In the case of synthetic fiber consumption, price factor was the dominant influences in explaining consumption variations. The magnitude of these economic factors, however, differs among different fibers for example, the income and price elasticities are much greater for synthetic fibers than for cotton fibers. This study discloses that although the coefficient of determination is reasonably high, the standard demand equation dose not account for non-economic factors, such as style trends, changes in living habit, and regional population changes. Although further analysis was made to test the non-economic factors by introducing a time variable, the result was less than satisfactory in explaining the trends of structural changes. It is speculated, therefore, that the rapid expansion of synthetic fiber industry was do disruptive that it may have caused a fundamental shift in the consumption functions of the cotton and rayon fibers.
