초등학교 영어교과서의 동사 연어(collocation) 사용 양상 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 연어 학습의 중요성을 바탕으로 초등학생들이 영어를 배울 때 가장 중요한 도구가 교과서임을 착안, 초등학교 영어 교과서에 나타나는 동사 연어 사용 양상을 연어 결합 유형별로 분석하여 이들의 다양성과 진정성을 코퍼스 비교를 통해 알아보았다. 이를 위해, 2009 개정 초등 영어 5, 6학년 교과서를 코퍼스로 구축하고, 그 중 빈도가 높은 동사 10개의 연어 결합 유형을 AntConc 3.4.4w를 이용하여 분석 하였다. 또한 미국 초등학교 교과서 코퍼스와 미국 영어 코퍼스인 COCA에서 같은 고빈도 동사의 연어 결합 유형을 분석하여 한국 영어 교과서에 나타나는 동사 연어 양상과 비교해보았다. 그 결과, 한국 영어 교과서에서 고빈도로 출현하는 동사 10개와 함께 쓰이는 연어 결합 유형의 양상이 미국 교과서와 COCA와 다음과 같은 차이 점이 있었다. 첫째, 한국 영어 교과서의 고빈도 동사 연어 결합은 대부분 약한 연어 결합 유형이었는데, 미국 교과서와 COCA의 고빈도 동사 연어 결합은 비교적 강한 연어 결합 유형이었다. 둘째, 한국 교과서의 고빈도 동사 연어 유형이 미국 교과서에 나타난 고빈도 연어 유형보다 다양성 부분에서 부족한 양상을 보였다. 셋째, 한국 초등학교 학생 수준에서 이해 가능한 연어 결합이며 원어민들이 많이 사용하는 연어 결합임에도 불구하고 교과서에 등장하지 않는 고빈도 동사 연어 결합이 있었다. 이 러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 우리 초등학교 영어 교과서에서는 학생들 수준에 적합하며 실용적인 동사 연어를 적극적으로 반영할 필요가 있으며, 어휘 목록과 함께 연어 목록도 제공한다면 영어 교수·학습에 큰 도움이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

The present study investigated types of verb collocations presented in elementary school English textbooks and compared with the corpus of American elementary English textbooks and the COCA. For this, a corpus was constructed with the 5th and 6th grade English textbooks of elementary school. Then the 10 most frequent collocations made from a combination with a verb selected and analyzed using the AntConc 3.4.4w. The study found that there are some differences in the patterns of the verb collocations between the Korean English textbooks and the US English textbooks and the COCA. The verb collocations in the Korean English textbooks were mostly weak collocation types, whereas stronger collocations appear in the US English textbooks and the COCA. Also, there were less a variety of collocations with the verbs in the Korean English textbooks than those in the US textbooks and the COCA. Third, the frequency of the verb collocations in the Korean English textbooks was different from that in the US English textbooks and the COCA. Finally, the Korean English textbooks did not entail the collocations of high frequency verbs that elementary school students can easily understand and most native speakers of English commonly use. The suggestions and implications are as follows: First, in the future, in making elementary school English textbooks, practical verb collocations that are used by native speakers of English and learnable by elementary school students should be included. Second, although it is not possible to reflect all the collocations, it will be helpful not only to include the list of single words but also the list of collocations for learners and teachers.
