영문 초록

In this paper, we considered various methods to estimate the household equivalence scale. Traditional simple estimates start out on defining material needs at a minimum level. However, the choice of nonfood is arbitrary. The imputation of joint costs of the household and scale effects is an unresolved problem. A more sophisticated method based on food shares tends to overestimate the cost ratios. The “adult goods” method tends to underestimate the scale because of high fixed costs. The scales based on demand behavior, estimated on complete demand systems, seem more hopeful, but Pollak and Wales argue that demand behavior does not give a valuable result either.
