There are three different editions of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the first quarto (Q1), the second quarto (Q2) published in 1604, and the First Folio (F1) published in 1623, so the content of the translation varies significantly depending on the version. Although there is not a consensus over which edition is most precise, Q2 is more suitable than F1 for literary texts, and F1 is more appropriate for scripts used on the stage. Hamlet is the most frequently translated of Shakespeare’s works in Korea, but there is considerable variation in the original text translation. It is essential to decide which version to use before translating. However, there were not many translations that correctly identified the source text before 2000. This paper discusses the issues relating to the version used in the translation and the problems this causes, focusing on interpretations of Hamlet’s first soliloquy which includes the problematic line “O, that this too too solid/sullied flesh would melt”(1.2.129). The translations of Hamlet’s third soliloquy (“To be, or not to be, that is the question.” 3.1.56) will also be examined. Besides, this paper discusses the issues regarding verse or prose translations.
