The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore an in-depth understanding of how children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) experience musical connections in improvisation, which is a distinct characteristic of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy. This case study offers profiles of three cases involving children with ASD who attended a music therapy center in a metropolitan area in US for weekly individual sessions with the researcher for a period of three to nine months. To gather the data, videotaped sessions and transcriptions, which included details regarding signifi cant musical moments, were used. In the data analysis, the researcher reviewed these videotaped sessions numerous times and highlighted signifi cant musical connections in interactive improvisation. Th e results showed that all three children were able to interact musically, and that diff erent musical components such as rhythm, singing, and melody played roles in co-creating music. Th rough these techniques, children with ASD in this case study were able to be present, stay focused, have fun, and connect to both music and their therapist.
