Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge about Early Citizenship Education: Pedagogical Possibilities for Global Citizenship

국문 초록

Since the 1990s, the increasing number of immigrants arriving for marriage and work in Korea has diversified the country’s population. This reshaping of the population has created a need for curriculum change in terms of how to prepare young children to become good citizens, both nationally and internationally. The study aimed to explore the pedagogical content knowledge of early citizenship education through individual interviews with 54 South Korean early childhood teachers during two semesters in 2016. The results demonstrated that teachers frequently prepare young children for citizenship by using community-based rather than individualized goals. Furthermore, the majority cited knowledge related to a sustainable society, communal relationship-oriented values, and interpersonal skills to develop positive relationships as important content areas for early citizenship education. The research identified the participants’ conceptions of citizenship with regard to their national identity as South Korean. Moreover, the pedagogical possibilities in transforming early childhood education to achieve a global citizen identity were discussed.

영문 초록

본 연구는 유아시민교육에 대한 교사의 교수내용지식을 탐구하기 위하여 유아교사 54명을 대상으로 유아시민교육의 목표와 내용에 대해 인터뷰하고 내용분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 유아교사들은 개인 지향의 목표보다 공동체 기반 목표에 중점을 두고 유아시민교육을 실시하고 있으며, 지속가능한 사회를 위해 필요한 지식과 공동체적 관계의 가치 그리고 대인간 상호작용기술을 유아시민교육의 중요한 교육내용이라고 인식하고 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 유아교사들이 인식하고 있는 한국인으로서의 시민정체성 개념을 도출하고, 유아기 세계시민교육의 가능성을 높이기 위해 교육과정 및 교육방법적 전환이 필요함을 논의하였다.
