Newcastle disease(ND) is an acute, highly contagious disease causing high mortality in many avian species including chicken, wild birds such as pheasant, quail and partridge. Recent use of intensive raising system for the purpose of meat production and game in pheasant flocks has brought about an increase in incidences of many kinds of infectious diseases including ND.
In this studies, we examined biological and physicochemical properties, pathogenicity and antigenic differences of NDV isolates. In the test for the physicochemical and biological properties, the virus isolates were sensitive to lipid solvents such as ether or chloroform, and labile at pH 3.0. The infectivity titers of the virus isolates were not affected by IUDR treatment. All isolates were stable at 56℃ for 2 hours in terms of infectivity and HA activities. The virus isolates had similar hemagglutination activities with red blood cells(RBC) from various animal species such as avian, guineapig, rat, mouse, cow and human(O type), however, some differences in HA activities with RBC of sheep and rabbit were observed between the virus isolates. All virus isolates produced white plaque with various size in diameter(1.2~2.8mm) after 96 hours incubation.
