Ivermectin is used as pestcidal agents of fruits and vegitables as well as antiparasitic drug. The residual toxicity of the drug on the surface of fruits and vegitables, therefore, could cause a public health problem if humans consume a sufficient amount of such foods. In this study, the toxic effect of ivermectin was evaluated in 50 mice (ICR), 5 to 6 months old, divided into five groups with different dosage levels of ivermectin which was administered orally, and the following results were observed.
Clinical signs of ivermectin toxicity ranged from depression, increased respiration and salivation in groups with low levels of ivermectin to rough coat, nervous movement, incoordination, convulsions and pneumotoxic respiration in more severely affected groups.
Main gross findings including enlarged and congested liver, spleen and kidney were evident as the level of ivermectin administered was increased. However, individual differences of these changes were also observed within groups.
Histopathological changes in the liver showed granular degeneration and multifocal necrosis of hepatocytes, and active regeneration of hepatocytes particularly in perilobular region. In addition, mild to severe nephrosis, increased splenic megakaryocytes and fibrinoid degeneration of splenic arteries due to the toxic effects of ivermectin were observed.
