To obtain the basic data for investigation of the protective effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus-fermented milk against cadmium toxicity, the effects of administration of L. acidophilus-fermented milk on feed and water consumption and body weight gains in cadmium-treated rats were studied.
The experimental rats were divided into 2 groups that were consisted of the one group administered with cadmium alone, and the other group administered with cadmium mixed with L. acidophilus-fermented milk. Each group was orally administered with different doses of cadmium such as 1.7㎍/g b.w./day, 3.4㎍ /g b.w./day, 6.8㎍/g b.w./day, and 13.6㎍/g b.w./day, respectively, for 1 to 8 weeks.
The feed consumptions of rats in the group administered with cadmium alone were significantly reduced compared with control group(P<0.01), but the group administered with cadmium mixed with L. acidophilus-fermented milk were not significantly different from control group in the low dose of cadmium treated groups (Cd 1.7㎍~3.4㎍ /g b.w.). The water consumption were also significantly lowered in all groups compared with that of control group(P<0.01). But, at the lower doses(Cd 1.7~3.4㎍/g b.w.) of cadmium, the group administered with cadmium alone showed significant reduction of water consumption compared with the groups administered with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk(P<0.05). The feed efficiency of rats was higher in the groups administered with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk than the group administered with cadmium alone.
The weight gains of rats in the groups administered with cadmium mixed with L. acidophilus-fermented milk were slightly reduced than those of the group administered with cadium alone, but there was not significant differences between two groups.
