This study was performed to find out thd protective effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus-fermented milk against accumulation of cadmium in rats.
The experimental rats were divided into 2 groups that were consisted of the one group administered with cadmium alone, and the other group administered with cadmium mixed with L. acidophilus-fermented milk. Each group was orally administered with different doses of cadmium such as 1.7㎍ /g b. w. /day, 3.4㎍ /g b. w ./day, 6.8㎍ /g b. w. /day, and 13.6㎍ /g b. w. /day, respectively, for 1 to 8 weeks. Cadmium levels of the blood, liver, kidney, testis and spleen were investigated for the experimental groups.
The results obtained throughout the experiments were summarized as follows :
1. The accumulation levels of cadmium in the whole blood of rats were not significantly differences between the groups adminstered with cadmium alone and the group administered with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk. However, the accumulation levels of cadmium in the liver of rats in the groups administered with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk were significantly reduced than those of the groups administered with cadmium alone, at the low dose of cadmium treated groups.
2. The accumulation levels of cadmium in the kidney of rats in the groups administered with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk were significantly reduced than those of the groups administered with cadmium alone, at the low dose of cadmium treated groups, and those in the testis of rats in the groups administerd with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk were significantly reduced than those of the groups administered with cadmium alone, at the low dose of cadmium treated groups. But there was not significant in the spleen.
3. When compared with the amount of cadmium accumulation in the blood and each organ, liver showed the highest, following the kidney and testis regardless of administered of the fermented milk, at the low doses of cadmium treated groups. But, at the high dose of cadmium treated groups, it was the highest in the kidney, than following liver and blood.
4. The relative ratio of cadmium accumulation in the organs of rats was the highest at the one week after cadmium administration in all experimental groups, and then it showed gradually decreasing patterns according to the increasing period of cadmium administration. On the other hand, it was the lower in the groups administered with cadmium mixed with the fermented milk than the groups administered with cadmium alone, at the low dose of cadmium treated groups. The accumulation levels of cadmium in above organs except blood were shown highly significant correlation coefficiency(P<0.05, P<0.01) between duration and amounts of cadmium administration.
5. According to the above results, this study could suggest that L. acidophilus-fermented milk has reducing effects on cadmium accumulation in the liver, kidney and testis, at the low dose of cadmium administration.
