Five isolates of coccidia (predominantly Eimeria tenella) from chicken submitted to diagnostic laboratory were tested for efficacy and sensitivity to seven commercial anticoccidial drugs, including salinomycin, lasalocid, DOT, decoquinate, clopidol, nicarbazin, and stenorol.
The mortality in DOT medicated group (average 24%) was significantly greater than in the other medicated groups(average 0-4%), with no significant differences among them.
The percents OPG reduction were very high in nicarbazin (average 100%) and decoquinate(average 96.2%) groups, and also high in other medicated groups (average 79.8-89.9%).
The packed cell volumes were higher in nicarbazin (average 27.74%) and lasalocid (26.34%) groups than in the other medicated groups, with no significant differences from noninfected, nonmedicated group (average 28.66%) while the lowest in DOT group (average 16.70%), with no significant differences from infected, nonmedicated group (average17.88%).
The cecal lesion scores and fecal scores were significantly lower in nicarbazin(average 0.34, 0.40), lasalocid(average 0.58, 0.60) and decoquinate (average 0.62, 0.73) groups, but significantly higher in DOT group (average 3.42, 3.00)than in the other medicated groups.
The percents oocyst sporulation were equal or higher in each medicated group in comparision to infected, nonmedicated group.
Based upon these results of all measurements, nicarbazin had the most efficacious anticoccidial activity, and anticoccidial efficacies of lasalocid and decoquinate were also superior to the other drugs.
The results of sensitivities judged by the parameters of percent optimal anticoccidial activity utilized growth and survival ratio showed that coccidial isolates tested were sensitive to clopidol(average 98.0), nicarbazin(average 96.8%), decoquinate (average 90.4%), lasalocid (average 87.6%), and stenorol (average 86.0%), with no significant difference from sensitivity in noninfected, nonmedicated group, but had slightly reduced sensitivity to salinomycin(average 82.6%)and resistance to DOT (average 45.5%), with significant difference from sensitivity in noninfected, nonmedicated group.
