외국인 대학생을 대상으로 한 교양 과정 글쓰기 교재 개발 및 효과 검증

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 외국인 학부생의 교양 과정에 필요한 글쓰기 교재의 개발 과정을 재검토 하고, 교육적인 효과를 검증하는 것이다. 외국인 학부생 중에는 학술적인 글쓰기 능력 부족으로 한국의 대학 생활 적응과 강의 수강에 어려움을 겪는 경우가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 대학의 교양 과정 글쓰기 과목을 수강하는 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 2014년 2학기부터 2015년 2학기까지 3학기에 걸쳐 대학 강의 수강에 필요한 쓰기 교육 내용에 대하여 요구 조사를 실시하고, 기존의 교재 분석을 통해서 교 재 집필의 원리를 정리하여 2016년 ‘유학생을 위한 글쓰기 기초’ 교재를 개발하였다. 이 교재를 서울 소재 S대학교 교양 필수 ‘사고와 표현’ 과목의 외국인 분반 수강생에게 한 학기 동안 강의한 후 교재 사용 전후 글쓰기 능력을 비교, 평가하였다. 그 결과, 가장 기초적인 쓰기 능력인 문어체와 객관적인 표현의 사용 능력, 학술적인 장르에 적합한 표현 사용 등이 향상되었고 학술적인 주제에 적합한 내용 구성 능력이 향상 되었다. 즉, 학문적인 글쓰기를 위한 기초 글쓰기 능력이 향상되었다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 수강생에게 교재만족도를 조사한 결과 한국어 능력에 맞았으며, 글쓰기 능력을 높이는데 적당한 것으로 나타났다. 앞으로 교양 과정 교재 개발에서 학부생들의 특징과 한국어 능력이 반영되어야 하며 전공 영역과 과제 수행 영역을 고려한 연구가 더 필요하리라고 본다.

영문 초록

This study aims to review the development process of Basics of Writing for Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) Students, a Korean writing textbook designed for foreign students at Korean universities who speak Korean as a foreign language, and to use the textbook in a lecture to validate its effectiveness. Foreign students at Korean universities tend to experience difficulties in Korean-language lectures because their Korean writing skills are insufficient for university lectures. In this light, I considered the KFL students’ demands identified in previous Korean writing classes and established the principles of developing a writing textbook, followed by the development of a learner-based textbook titled Basics of Writing for KFL Students. I used this textbook in a one-semester KFL writing course for first-year students at S University in Seoul, Korea, and evaluated their writing skills after the course, and compared the students’ performance before and after the use of the textbook. The best educational effect was identified in the enhancement of basic writing skills for formulating academic texts. The students who took the course demonstrated improvements in their use of the written style, objective expressions, and appropriate expressions for an academic genre. They also showed improvements in spelling, using postpositions, and spacing, the essential skills for discussing academic subjects in a written language. In other words, the students displayed improvements in basic skills for academic writing. These findings warrant further research endeavors to develop textbooks that take into account the major subject areas of the students as well as the assignments they are tasked with.
