Feeds of 74 samples, such as cereals grain(12), bran(13), oilseed meal(15), fish meal(16), assorted feed(22) and others(1) were collected in Busan and Gyeong-nam districts from August to October in 1981.
Feed samples were investigated for contamination of bacteria, yeast and molds, and the antimicrobial drug susceptibility of 164 isolates of E. coli were determined by means of agar plate dilution technique.
The results obtained wre summarized as follows;
1. The viable bacterial count, yeast and molds on aerobic cultivation were level of 30-7,900,000 and 30-5,800,000 per gram of samples, respectively.
The numbers of coliform group-positive samples were 49 (66.2%), but Salmonella spp. have never been detected from the all feeds tested.
Regarding to the kinds of feed, in cereal grain, the viable number of bacteria and mold were the most numerous; 860-7,900,000 and 30-1,600,000 per gram of samples, respectively. The coliform group was detected 100 percentage in assorted feeds.
2. The common species of bacterial flora in the feeds were members of Bacillus and Micrococci; of 354 strins of bacteria isolated, 152 strains (42.9%) were identified as Bacillus, 112 strains (31.6%) of micrococci, 53 strains(15.0%) of Enterobacteriaceae, 22 strains(6.2%) of Coryneforms, 3 strains(0.9%) of Pseudomonas and 1 strain (0.3%) of Aeromonas, respectively.
3. Of 164 strains of E. coli isolated, 40.2% were detected as resistant to 4 antimicrobial drugs, ampicillin(APC), streptomycin(SM), tetracycline(TC) and chloramphenicol(CP) in conentration over 25 micrograms per ml, where as the all strains tested were sensitive to gentamycin(GM), kanamycin(KM) and vibramycin(VM).
Regarding the drug, antibiotic resistance was 24.4% to tetracycline, 20.7% to ampicillin, 8.5% to chloramphenicol and 4.9% to streptomycin, respectively.
Regarding the origin of isolation, antibiotic resistance of isolates was 75.0% in oilseed meals and fish meals, 45.0% assorted feeds, 30.0% of cereals gain, and 17.6% of bran, respectively.
A total of 8 patterns of drug resistance of 164 strains of E. coli against 4 drugs in general use such as APC, SM, TC and CP were observed, and the most common multiple resistance patterns were APC, TC pattern(11.0%).
