Objectives : The purpose of this study was to confirm the relationship between alcohol-induced blackout and cognitive function, and investigate the impact of blackout on cognitive function and neurophysiology in alcohol dependents. Methods :
The participants were 38. The researchers examined clinical features, the Korean version of Alcohol Dependence Scale (ADSK), and the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD). Neurotrophins were measured through ELISA. The researchers examined the relationships between cognitive functions measured by the CERAD, clinical features, and blackout. The patients were divided into two groups by the frequency of blackout. Group differences in CERAD, ADS-K and clinical data were then analyzed. Results : Among the subtests of CERAD, only MMSE-K showed a correlation to blackout.
ADS-K and the frequency of alcohol consumption were associated with blackout. Higher blackout had lower MMSE-K, severe, ADS-K scores, and more frequent alcohol consumption.
There were no associations between blackout and neurotrophins. Conclusion : Tlcohol-induced blackout might play an important role in the decline of basic cognitive function in alcohol dependence. Moreover, blackout is related to problematic alcohol consumption, which can lead to cognitive dysfunction of alcohol dependence.
