Purpose
Technological advance in computed tomography(CT) have led to an increase in the number of patients that can be admitted daily. This increase has caused a rise in nasocomial infections. This research was investigated the disinfectant power of two solutions: 75% ethyl alcohol and a diluted NaOCI 4% solution.
Materials and methods
In the research 5 representative bacteria were found in the CT room. The five strains of bacteria are coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCNS), methicillin-resistant staphylococci aureus(MRSA) and staphylococci aureus(SA). Samples were acquired from 10 locations: the patient couch, control button, door handle in the both CT scan rooms and telephone and operator mouse in both operator rooms. Following the naked eye survey method of a blood agar plate, colonies were described as many(+++, 3 or more colonies) moderate(++, 2 colonies), and 1 colony was few(+). Counting was done by using Mini-tab version 15 statistical processing program.
Results
A lot of CNS was detected 6 of the 10 locations(60%) in the both CT scan rooms and operator rooms before disinfection. Results after disinfection with 75% ethyl alcohol were detected in just 1 location which was moderate(++) and the others were few(+) or no growth. The extinction rate of total colonies was 97.5% compared with before disinfection. Results after disinfection with the NaOCL 4% diluted solution were detected in 3 locations with CNS. However all locations were classified as few(+) and total colonies was just one. The disinfection rate of both solutions was similar at 97.5% for the 75% ethyl alcohol solution and 98% for the NaOCI 4% solution.
Conclusion
Failing to disinfect the CT rooms daily leads to growth of non-pathogenic bacteria. Although the disinfectant power of both solutions was similar, this study recommends the use of NaOCI 4% because it was much more efficient dian the 75% ethyl alcohol.
