연결 어미 ‘-거드면’ 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 주로 19세기 후반부터 20세기 초 국어 자료에 나타나는 ‘-거드면’ 구문을 면밀히 고찰하여 선행연구에서 제시한 견해의 타당성을 검토하고, 그 형태ㆍ통사적 특성 및 의미 기능을 분석하였다. 일부 선행연구에서 알려진 바와는 다르게 ‘-거드면’은 결합하는 선행 용언에 제약이 없을 뿐 아니라 주어 및 후행절 서법에 대한 제약도 없으며, 비록 그 예는 드물지만 ‘-시-, -ᄋㆍᆸ-, -앗-’과 같은 일부 선어말 어미와 결합하는 용례도 발견되었다. 특히 본고는 ‘-거드면’ 구문 중에는 주로 후행절에 과거 시제가 나타나는 구문을 중심으로 반사실적 가정이나 화자가 과거 시점에서 앞으로 일어나게 될 일을 추측하거나 가정하는 상황을 나타내는 예문이 있음을 확인하고, 이를 통해 선행연구에서 제기된 주장 중 연결어미 ‘-거든’과 ‘-으면’이 통합한 것이나 ‘-게 되면’의 구성으로 보는 견해보다는 ‘-겟-+-더- +-면’과 같은 어미의 결합형으로 보는 것이 보다 타당함을 밝혔다. 즉 ‘-거드면’은 본래 화자가 과거 시점에서 앞으로 일어나게 될 일을 추측하여 가정하는 상황에서 쓰이던 것이었는데, ‘-더/드-’의 ‘과거’의 의미가 약화되면서 단순한 가정이나 조건을 나타내게 된 것으로 추정하였다. 본고는 아울러 판소리계 고소설이나 독립신문 외의 다양한 자료를 통해 ‘-거드면’이 전라방언에만 국한되어 사용되지 않았을 것을 추정해 보았다. 다만 ‘*-겟더면’과 같은 기원적 형태가 확인되지 않는 점이나 그 소멸 이유에 대해서는 구체적으로 논의하지 못했는데 이에 대해서는 후고에서 밝히기로 한다.

영문 초록

This research investigated the examples of conjunctive ending ‘-geodeumyeon’ which were mostly used from the late 19th to early 20th century and determined that morpho-syntactic characteristics and the semantic function of ‘-geodeumyeon’. Unlike the findings of the previous researches, ‘-geodeumyeon’ does not show the restriction on the kind of predicates as well as a subject and sentence types of the following clause. Also this research found out a few examples that ‘-geodeumyeon’ followed the prefinal endings, such as ‘-si-’, ‘-ʌp-’, and ‘-at-’. This research especially found out that some examples of ‘-geodeumyeon’ expressed counterfactual hypothesis or a future event which a speaker speculated or presumed in the past tense of view, mainly when the following clause expressed past tense. This supports the analysis that ‘-geodeumyeon’ originally consists of ‘-get-(futureness) + -deo-(past tense) + -myeon(condition)’. This research also showed various examples of ‘-geodeumyeon’ that were produced by a speaker who did not speak a Jeolla dialect. This means that ‘-geodeumyeon’ was not a particular regional dialect, such as Jeolla dialect, as Choe(1992) proposed. This research presumed that ‘-geodeumyeon’ expressed a speaker’s speculation or presumption of future event in the past tense of view, but it underwent changes that it expresses simple presumption or condition such as ‘-myeon’, according to the historical change that ‘-deo-’ lost its function of past tense and obtained modality. However, it needs more detailed discussion in relation to other conditional expressions, such as ‘-geodeun’, ‘-myeon’, and ‘-l geot gateumyeon’. Also further study needs to examine the reason why the original form of ‘-geodeumyeon’, such as ‘*-getdeomyeon’, did not occur in any documents.
