This study was carried out to examine morphological differences in the roots among the seedlings of three Alnus species(Alnus hirsuta, A. glutinosa and A. firma), to observe any changes in their roots after inoculation with Agrobacterium rhizogenes which affects on root hair formation and on root elongation, and to explain the effect of inoculation with A. rhizogenes on the inoculation rate of Frankia AvcI1 in Alnus species.
When the number of root hairs was observed in Alnus species uninoculated with A. rhizogenes during 11 weeks after germination, A. glutinosa showed the greatest number of hairs(55.8) per unit length, which was greater than A. hirsuta or A. firma. But being inoculated with A. rhizogenes, A. hirsuta and A. glutinosa showed the greatest number per 1 ㎜. A. firma did less number than other species. As for the effect of A. rhizogenes on root hair formation, 46.8% of increase in the number of root hairs was observed in A. hirsuta, 27.5% in A. glutinosa, and 24.8% in A. firma, respectively.
In the absence of A. rhizogenes, the highest rate of Frankia inoculation was shown by A. hirsuta. However, in the presence of A. rhizogenes, A. firma showed the greatest rate.
Therefore, if we generalize the results, it follows that more hairy roots do not mean more chance for Frankia inoculation.
