Diallcl crosses among six kidney bean varieties were made, and parents, one set of F₁, and reciprocals were grown in the farm of Gyeongsang National University, with the three replications in the randomized block design. The six parents and their 30 combinations of F₁, crosses were evaluated for 7 economic characters.
1. In ANOVA of diallel data the variances due to g.c.a., s.c.a. and rep. were highly significant for all characters. And the mean square values of g.c.a.. were greater than those of s.c.a. for all characters, indicating the preponderance of additive genetic variance. Especially, in the estimated g.c.a. effects of the parents, Romano and Rich Green were better combiners for yield while Tender Best and Cornell 49-242 were poor. The crosses between Romano×Hucksando and Tender Best×Rich Green showed high s.c.a. effects, the those of Cornell 49-242×Tender Best and Hucksando×Tender Best gave low s.c.a. effects for yield.
2. In Vr-Wr graphical analyses: Over-dominance was exhibited on days to maturity and yield, mean partial dominance on days to flowering, stem diameter, pod length and 50 grain weight, and complete dominance to over-dominance on grain numbers per pod, respectively. It is apparent that Sure Crop Stringless Wax and Cornell 49-242 appear to be contained most of the dominant genes for yield, while Romano, Hucksando and Tender Best contained most of the recessive genes.
3. Components of variances: For two characters days to flowering and pod length, the degree of dominance from √H₁/D was lesser than 1, indicating partial dominance, and lower value of H₁ than those of D indicating greater effects of additive than dominance gene effect. Negative F values for days to flowering, days to maturity and pod length indicated an excess of recessive allels over dominant alleles, and positive F values for other characters indicated more dominant alleles than recessive alleles. Apparent dominance asymmetry of positive and negative alleles were indicated, as H₂/4H₁ was less than 0.25 for all the characters, and the ratio K_D/K_R was greater than 1 for most characters, which indicates a preponderance of dominant genes. Heritability values of two ecological characters, pod length and 50 grain weight were the highest, those of grain numbers per pod were the lowest.
