한국과 미국 초등학교 2학년 학생들의 패턴에 대한 이해 비교

국문 초록

패턴에 대해 다양한 연구가 이루어지고 있지만, 우리나라 학생들과 다른 나라 학생들의 패턴 활동에 대한 비교 연구는 많지 않다. 이에 본 연구는 한국과 미국의 초등학교 2학년 124명을 대상으로 반복패턴과 증가패턴에 대한 이해와 오류를 비교 분석하였다. 한국과 미국 학생들은 반복패턴을 증가패턴보다 더 정확하게 연장하였으며, 단순 증가패턴을 복잡한 증가패턴보다 더 바르게 연장하였다. 한국과 미국 학생들은 공통적으로 증가패턴 연장에서 세 가지 유형의 오류(증가패턴을 긴 반복패턴으로 인식, 증가하는 요소의 수를 바르지 않게 연장, 하나의 증가단위를 반복)를 보였다. 미국 학생들은 증가패턴의 일부는 바르게 연장하다가 전체를 반복패턴과 같이 연장하는 오류 유형을 추가적으로 보였다. 증가패턴 연장에서 요소의 형태(예, 색깔, 도형, 문자)에 초점을 둔 학생들은 증가패턴을 바르게 연장하지 못하였고, 증가하는 요소의 수에 초점을 맞추는 학생들은 바르게 연장하였다. 그러나 일부 우리나라 학생들은 복잡한 증가패턴에서 요소가 증가한다는 것은 인식하였지만 패턴을 바르게 연장하지 못하는 경우도 있었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과를 바탕으로 우리나라 패턴 교수·학습에 시사점을 제기하였다.

영문 초록

A growing body of research has focused on students patterning understandings. Not much research, however, has studied international comparison of students patterning understandings. The purpose of this study is to compare 124 second graders patterning(repeating pattern and growing pattern) understandings between South Korea and the US. Results showed that students extended repeating patterns better than growing patterns, and simple growing pattern better than complex growing pattern. From South Korea and US students, I found three types of misunderstandings in extending growing patterns(considering growing pattern as a long repeating pattern, increasing incorrectly, and repeating of one term). Also, US students extended growing patterns as partly growing then repeating of the whole. In addition, students who focused on the type of element such as color, shape or letter did not extend growing patterns correctly. On the other hand, students who focused the growing number of elements in each term extended growing patterns successfully. Although some of South Korea students incorrectly extended a complex growing pattern, they recognized that the number of elements in each term was increasing. The findings suggest implications for teaching and learning patterns.
