The paper analyzed the use of suspensions in English translations of Korean fiction, Silver Stallion: A Novel of Korea (1990) and Trees on the Cliff (1980)/Trees on a Slope (2005) in particular. These texts were chosen for their translation quality and use of suspensions. Silver Stallion is Ahn Junghyo’s self-translation/English adaptation of his novel in Korean, Eunma neun oji annunda. Two English translations of Hwang Sun-won’s Namudeul bitare seoda, Trees on the Cliff (1980) by Chang Wang-rok and Trees on a Slope (2005) by Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton, were compared to see different uses of suspensions by different translators. The analysis of suspensions in Silver Stallion, Trees on the Cliff, and Trees on a Slope finds that Ahn Junghyo knows when to use suspensions and makes a good use of them in his translations/adaptation(s). Even when there was no narration next to the character’s dialogue in the Korean text, Ahn added a suspension to the speech text in the translation/adaptation and used it as a way to providing additional information to the English reader. The analysis also shows that Ahn Junghyo and Hwang Sun-won’s peculiar way of sequencing narration and speech in the Korean text is indeed similar to that of English and that the translators tend to use suspensions to render the same effect on the target reader when translating into English.
