After the Second World War ended in 1945, many American universities started to provide American Studies as a new educational program. Brown University initiated a graduate American Studies program in 1945 and an undergraduate American Studies program called American Civilization Concentration in 1949. Riding the new wave of American Studies education in the postwar era, the undergraduate American Studies program of Brown University sailed smoothly from the beginning. It received not only enthusiastic administrative support from the president of the university, but also a substantial amount of financial support from Carnegie Corporation of New York for five years from 1949 to 1954. In addition, its success was attributed to increased educational demands, voluntary support from the administration of the school and non-profit organizations, consensus support from the academic world, and new pedagogical approaches. The Brown University case shows what new educational programs of American Studies require to be successful.
