일반문자학에서 바라본 훈민정음

국문 초록

본 논문은 일반문자학적 관점에서 서양의 학자들이 훈민정음을 어떻게 이해해 왔는지 살펴본다. 이러한 연구는 지금까지 이미 여러 번 정리된바 있지만, 본 논문에서는 훈민정음의 문자적 특징, 창제 배경 등 주요 논점에 따라 검토하였다. 서양의 문자학자들이 제시하고 있는 훈민정음의 주요 특징은 크게 도상성, 자질성, 비선형성의 세 가지로 정리할 수 있으며, 이러한 세 가지 특징은 훈민정음의 과학성, 체계성, 실용성에 바로 대응이 된다. 훈민정음의 문자 유형에 대해 서도 여러 가지 논의가 이루어졌는데, 이는 주로 훈민정음의 특징 중 어느 것에 주목하느냐에 따라 달라진다. 문자학자들은 훈민정음이 영향을 받았을 가능성이 큰 문자로 파스파 문자와 인도계 문자를 언급하는데, 이는 국내 학계의 분위기 와는 다른 셈이다. 서양의 문자학계에서 이루어진 연구 성과 중에서 과도한 상찬의 말이나 사소한 오류에 집착하기보다는, 앞으로 훈민정음 연구에 있어서 일반적 연구 성과를 어디까지 받아들이고 우리가 더 주목하고 참고할 것은 무엇인지 하는 관점으로 접근할 필요가 있다. 이런 과정을 통해서 훈민정음이 가진 문자론적 가치를 보편적으로 인식할 수 있을 것이며, 일반문자학적인 관점에서 훈민정음이 기여할 바가 무엇인지가 더욱 뚜렷이 드러날 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the present outcomes and prospects of Hunmin jeongeum from the graphological view. Although this sort of study has already been compiled several times, we has newly examined how Western scholars understood Hunmin jeongeum by major issues such as the characteristics of Hunmin jeongeum and the background of its inventions. The principal traits of Hunmin jeongeum, which are proposed by Western scholars, can be summarized in three major ways; iconicity, featural system, and non-linearity. There have also been various discussions among Western scholars about the script types of Hunmin jeongeum, which mainly depend on which of the characteristics of Hunmin jeongeum are noted. Western scholars refer to Phags-pa script and Indian scripts as scripts that are highly likely to affect Hunmin jeongeum, which is different from the atmosphere of the Korean academia. Instead of focusing on excessive praise of Western scholars or trivial errors, we need to approach the point of view of how we accept Western research achievements and what we should pay more attention to in future studies of Hunmin jeongeum. Through this process, it is possible to recognize the value of Hunmin jeongeum universally, and it will be more evident what Hunmin jeongeum contributes from the point of view of the study of writing systems or graphology in general.
