국문 초록

본 연구는 유치원 교사들의 과학교육에 대한 신념과 학습 경험에 대하여 알아본 질적사례연구이다. 이를 위하여 다음과 같은 두 가지 연구 문제를 제시하였다. 첫째, 유치원 교사들의 과학 학습 경험은 어떠한가? 둘째, 교사들의 과학 학습 경험은 그들의 과학교육에 대한 신념에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가? 이를 위하여 미국 텍사스 주의 공립 유치원에서 근무하는 4명의 교사들로부터 심층면접, 과학 수업 관찰, 수업 관련 자료 수집 등을 통하여 데이터를 수집하고 이를 분석하였다. 분석을 통해 드러난 결과에 의하면 유치원 교사들의 과학에 대한 신념과 그들의 과학 학습 경험은 서로 영향을 미치고 있었다. 특히, 4명의 교사 모두 부정적인 과학 학습 경험을 가지고 있었으며 대부분 잘 기억하지 못하는 특징을 보였다. 그러나 부정적인 과학 학습 경험에도 불구하고 모든 교사들이 유아 과학 교육에 대하여 긍정적인 태도를 지니고 있었으며, 이는 자신들의 부정적인 과학 학습 경험과는 반대로 자신의 학생들에게는 즐거운 경험이 될 수 있도록 노력하고자하는 신념을 보이기 때문인 것으로 나타났다. 예를 들어, 교사들은 과학 교육에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 유아의 흥미라는 신념을 가졌으며 이러한 신념을 실제 과학 활동에 반영하기 위해 노력하였다.

영문 초록

This study investigates kindergarten teachers’ beliefs and their learning experiences in science education through qualitative case study. This research addresses these topics by exploring two key questions: First, what are a sample of kindergarten teachers’ learning experiences as students? Second, how do these kindergarten teachers’ learning experiences affect their beliefs toward teaching science? The qualitative data for this research was undertaken in two phases. The first phase had formal and informal interviews with four kindergarten teachers from a public elementary school in Texas, US. The second one included observations of the science lessons. Based on the data, this study found a relationship between the teachers’ beliefs and their learning experiences in science education. In other words, the participant teachers’ personal learning history and their past schooling experiences along with more recent experiences influence their beliefs about teaching and learning science. For instance, the participant teachers recalled their negative experiences with traditional school science lectures and their desire to teach differently in their science lessons.
