Does Gender Still Matter?: The Usage and Acceptance of Smartphones for Learning in Higher Education

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 고등교육을 받고 있는 학생들이 스마트폰을 어떻게 사용하고 있는지를 고찰하고, 학생들의 성별에 따라 스마트폰을 학습적 목적으로 수용하는 정도에 차이가 있는지를 밝히는 데 있다. 2012년 12월에서 2013년 1월 동안 4주에 걸쳐 총 164명의 대학생과 대학원생을 대상으로 실시한 설문 결과로 밝혀낸 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 고등교육기관 소속 학생들은 주로 정보 검색, 메신저 사용, 채팅과 소셜 네트워킹 활용을 위해 스마트폰을 사용하고 있다. 둘째, 성별에 따라 스마트폰을 활용하는 목적에는 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 셋째, 스마트폰의 수용 정도를 목적 기대, 노력 기대, 촉진 조건과 불안감 수준에 따라 분석한 결과, 여학생들은 스마트폰 활용에 있어 남학생들보다 촉진 조건은 낮고 불안감은 높게 나타난다. 이 연구결과는 여학생들이 스마트폰과 같은 모바일 기기 사용에 대한 불안감을 낮추어 자신감을 가지고 활용할 수 있도록 교수자들이 효과적인 학습전략 및 방안을 마련하여 적용할 것을 제안한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how students in higher education are using smartphones and to investigate gender difference in students’ acceptance level toward smartphones for learning. Data were collected from 164 undergraduate and graduate students in South Korea between December 2012 and January, 2013. The findings show that students in higher education are using smartphones mostly in order to search the Internet, chat/use mobile messenger, and use Social Networking Sites (SNS). There is no gender difference regarding the purposes for using smartphones. However, the findings show that female students have lower facilitating conditions and higher anxiety than male when using smartphones for learning. These findings suggest that educators should develop learning strategies that can help female students to be more exposed to mobile technology such as smartphones and help them feel more confident in using mobile technology in and out of classroom.
