Shakespeare’s As You like It is written in the tradition of pastoral romance, in which the ordinary world (the court) is contrasted with the green world (the Forest of Arden). However, Shakespeare did not strictly follow the conventions of the pastoral tradition: he rather parodies the pastoral convention which depicts ideal settings and carefree characters like those of the Golden Age. The Forest of Arden does not symbolize the Arcadia of the Golden Age. The inhabitants of the forest are not free from the bitter cold, suffering from threats, danger, fear, and hunger. Touchstone, in particular, makes the characters recognize the harsh reality of the world and the truth about love. Touchstone, a wise fool in the play, provides a humorous atmosphere to the play through his wit, satire, and parody of follies. Alongside Rosalind’s cross-dressing Touchstone’s wit and parody contribute to the creation of a comic atmosphere in the play. This article discusses Rosalind’s cross-dressing, Touchstone’s use of parody, and the aspects of love in the context of pastoral drama and its parody.
