영문 초록

It has been controversial to make a clear-cut distinction between a compound and a derivation with the same element (Marchand 1969, Bauer 1983, Booij 2005, Kim 2015, among others). In an examination of the demarcation issue of compounding and suffixation, this paper investigates 15 Old English (OE) morphemes which were used both as free words and as the second parts of complex words. The main task of this article is to determine whether the OE borderline morphemes have suffixal status or not by using three criteria (similarity in form to a free word, semantic transparency, type frequency). The results of this article reveal that the OE morphemes vary in terms of the degree of transition from a free word to a suffix. I argue that the variant degrees of transition in the development of the morphemes can be best understood through the concept of the morphological cline with two poles of prototypical free words and suffixes at both ends (cf. Bauer 1983, 2005, Kim 2015).
