Dynamic lateral earth pressure will affect the stability of the retaining wall. In this paper, we examined recent case studies on seismic safety of the retaining wall. In general, Pseudo-static approach is used for the evaluation of the seismic safety for the retaining wall.
The pseudo-static approach is one of the conservative methods that evaluate the affect of the retaining wall. The pseudo-static method substitutes the acceleration-time history into equivalent static load, resulting conservative values. Formulas from Mononobe-Okabe and Seed-Whitman are widely used and the design seismic coefficient is calculated from the Peak ground acceleration. In recent studies, the seismic analysis of retaining wall using the centrifuge test and numerical models are performed. Seismic design coefficient can be calculated by considering the free-field motion or soil-retaining wall interaction. However, it is reported to be have considerable uncertainty.
